England fans winning the World Cup fancy dress battle... and earning the respect of locals

If there was a trophy awarded now for the attire of supporters at the World Cup, England would be favourites to win it.
At Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday, when England romped to a record 6-1 win against Panama, some fans even put themselves in danger of heatstroke.
That’s because they were wearing Russian fur hats, were dressed as Knights, complete with chain mail and plastic swords, and three were dressed as lions.
Well, it would be three, wouldn’t it?
And all that was in scorching conditions in excess of 30 degrees.

But the way the England fans have embraced the World Cup - and Russia - has been well received by the local people.
It’s been a case of so far, so good in terms of atmosphere, behaviour and respect. England supporters greeted Panama fans before the match - and consoled them after it.
One place you don’t see many England followers is here in Repino on the Gulf of Finland, where the team are based.
It’s a bit too quiet for them and probably expensive, too, as one of Russia’s upmarket areas.
But I spotted one last night, complete in England shirt, shorts and socks. However, it was only when I heard him speak that it became clear he was actually Russian.
It seems everyone wants to be in English dress - whether it’s replica or fancy.

ON the subject of what to wear, England boss Gareth Southgate is adamant his appearance won’t include a sling.
He’s ditched that, despite dislocating his shoulder in a fall last week while on one of his runs near Repino beach.
Southgate revealed it’s not an image he wants to portray in public.
The England boss said: “I was in plenty of pain and we won’t know until we have a proper scan, what the damage is. But I wasn’t prepared to wear that (the sling) in public.”
It’s as if England, ahead of Thursday night’s match in Kaliningrad against Belgium, aren’t prepared to show any sign of weakness.
So that is something else on display in Russia - the English stiff upper lip.
